Internet Search Marketing

May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

If you are launching a new website it takes a lot of time before your site is picked up by the Search Engines and has enough other sites linking to it to ensure a steady traffic flow.

If you would like to have a look at a company that can help with this check out this San Diego Internet marketing website.

The other alternative is that you can learn about SEO and traffic building yourself and as you learn make optimization changes to your site. As long as you track them and don’t try to change to much at once this can be the way to go - however be aware it can be a very big learning curve so if you don’t have the time and patience it may be best to just pay a company to do all the hard work for you.

One of the most important things that you can do is fill your site with quality content that is related to the topic of your website. The algorithms of search engines in today’s world are very complex and there is no point in trying to “trick” or confuse the search engines. This will only mean that your site may get punished and possibly even be banned from the search engines altogether!

Content is King and Paris Hilton is off to Jail!

May 6th, 2007 · No Comments

Its big news at the moment that Paris Hilton is being sent to jail for 45 days and by writing an article with her in the title the search engines would expect a decent amount of related information in the content of the article if it is going to rank well for those terms.

I was listening to a great podcast from Ten Minute Lessons titled What is the MOST important component of Search Engine Optimization - and it really brought home the fact that without great and targeted content it does not matter how much time you spend optimizing title tags and using keywords.

Search engines like Google are so smart that even if you use words like Paris Hilton and Prison in the title if you do not have an article about them specifically you are probably not going to rank that well for the term.

This is really an experiment within an experiment to see if by mentioning Paris Hilton within the text of the article Google gives us some love. I am sure that you as a reader of this blog will be interested in the results which I will of course write about in coming weeks.

Now Paris may not be the smartest celebrity chick out there but she is certainly one of the cutest - if I was the judge I think I may have turned a blind eye and simply let her get away with it as she is probably a lot more fun out of jail than in it.

Hilton tells it to the judge…

“I’m very sorry and from now on I’m going to pay complete attention to everything. I’m sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all,”

Using a SEO Tool to Optimize the Title for your Articles

April 29th, 2007 · No Comments

It is important when you write an article for your site that you take a decent amount of time when it comes to choosing the best title for it. I suggest you initially give the article whatever title first comes to mind and the proceed to create the rest of your post. Once the post is finished take a couple of the keywords that are pertinent to the article and use one of the keyword suggestion tools from the SEO Tools section on this site and make sure the words that you are using are popular ones.Â

Now this is obvious sure, but you would be amazed at the results that this can have. On one of my Blog sites I was in the process of moving a whole heap of old articles that I had written from one site to another and in the process optimized each of the titles in the manner that we have discussed. This can have a great effect on the traffic that you end up receiving and if your sites income is based on that traffic then its going to pretty quickly convert into dollars.

This very article you are reading now has an optimized title, it initially read “Optimizing your Article Titles by Using Keywords” however by checking the tools that are available to us all it soon became apparent that by using the words “SEO Tool” as part of the title there is a reasonable chance that its going to be picked up well by the search engines.

Google Search Results Up and Down

April 25th, 2007 · No Comments

I have noticed while tracking the rankings of various keywords lately there seems to be a lot of movement that can happen. For example a couple of weeks ago words that I was ranking for on Page 1 quickly dropped to page 3 and have now moved up to Page 2.

There seems to be quite a settling in period particularly for keywords that you have just started to rank for. You may find that initially you will rank very well for them, then suddenly drop.

This from what I can gather appears to be a normal process, its similar to how new sites can initially appear very well in the Google rankings, then they drop into obscurity.

Basic SEO mistakes that I made - Don’t make them yourself

April 21st, 2007 · No Comments

With a website you need traffic to make money, if you have enough traffic advertisers will hunt you down, blogs will be referring to you and pleading for links and the bucks will start to roll - it is just a matter of getting the maximum income you can from the pretty much unlimited space on your site.

There are many ways to getting traffic however not many are better or more sustainable than getting top rankings for popular keywords on the top search engines like Google and Yahoo. I have seen major companies that are paying money to systems like Google Adwords to get visitors when with a few tweaks of their site they wouldn’t have to be paying money to anyone.

For me in the last month or two this has become a real focus, I have found out so many things that I was doing wrong on some of my sites that really seem stupid, here are some of the mistakes I was making…

Using the same title and keywords on EVERY page of my site.
Now this is because I use included headers on my sites, that means if I want to change a link at the top of the page, I only need to change it in one place. However my title and keywords are also in this header so I need to change this so that every page has its own relevant title and keywords.

Optimized for unpopular Keywords
I used to guess at which keywords I optimized my sites for - now I use the Keyword checker tool to find out whether it is worth the effort.

Site Name in Title
On my job hunters websites I used to have “Jobhunters” as the first word in the title, now I have learnt that this is a waste of time, much better having something like Job Search as people will be looking for that - not Jobhunters. (obviously if you have a really big and well known brand this will not apply.)

Not using heading tags for headings.
On most of my sites I was not using tags like h1, h2 etc and was just increasing the font size. Google and other search engines look for heading tags to verify what is important on a page, so you need to use them.

Well that summarizes some of the main mistakes that I made with my sites, its still taking me a lot of time to fix them up but the results to date are promising. Good luck with your own sites and if you can think of a relevant mistake that you have made please let me know and we can include it in a future article. (along with the relevant link of course!)

Our SEO results begin to show

April 10th, 2007 · No Comments

Before you read this you will want to read…
Part 1Â : Using KeyWord Tools to target Your SEO
Part 2 :Â The SEO Experiment Continues - Quest for the Golden Search Ranking
Part 3: Using Keywords as part of your URLÂ

A couple of weeks ago we SEO optimized our Job Hunters websites for the key words Job Search which we had found to be extremely popular after checking them with the overture keyword tool.

When we started it is important to realize that we did not rank for these words at all, in any fashion. However after fine tuning the title, the content and setting up as many anchor links with those keywords as we can get away with results are beginning to bear fruit.

Now we are still not showing up for just job search however we are starting to rank quite well for various derivatives of this. e.g

job search aussie we are now on page 1
job search australia we’re page 3 at the top, a powerful term this one!
job search new zealand page 6 about halfway down, another powerful term.
jobsearch australia we are now page 1
jobsearch nz we are on page 1

So you can see that this is not Rocket Science, just common sense and doing careful research to check that the words that you are optimizing for are actually popular words. To often website owners think they know what the keywords for their site are and spend their money and time trying to generate traffic for those words - when they’re not actually popular at all!

For now I am going to keep riding this wave, because its heading in the right direction - lets see how far it can take us.

Using Keywords as part of your URL

April 4th, 2007 · No Comments

Today on the Jobhunters websites we are going to look at making the search page a little more “Search Engine Friendly” - if you missed the idea behind our SEO experiment go here first Using KeyWord Tools to target Your SEO

Currently the URL is called canddisplay.php … seemed like a good idea at the time and I know that it is short for candidate display. However do you think anyone is ever going to do a Google search for anything even resembling that?

For our Jobhunters sites we are trying to boost their search engine rankings for the Keywords Job Search and one way of helping this is by making the URL’s the same as the keywords that you are trying to rank for. So in our case we simply rename our file canddisplay.php to jobsearch.php and hopefully over time we will see improved rankings as a result of this.

Already Google has indexed our sites with the new keywords, titles etc, however they are still not even showing up for the search term. We will however be keeping a close eye on this over the next couple of weeks and will of course be reporting on the rankings as they change.

The SEO Experiment Continues - Quest for the Golden Search Ranking

March 30th, 2007 · No Comments

It is been approximately a week since our optimization was carried out on our Australian Job Search website. You can catch up with the previous article first to see how we got to today’s status if you like

Using KeyWord Tools to target Your SEO

Now we are still not appearing anywhere in the search results for the Words “Job Search” however we are now appearing for the words “Job Search Aussie” (34) and “Job Search Australia” (94)

I was thinking recently that it would be great if there was a place where like minded SEO wannabes could get together and try different links on their sites. For example if you placed a link to my Job Search site exactly how I wanted it on your Page Ranked 4 page I would be happy to reciprocate on one of my sites.

If this is something you are interested please drop me a comment and maybe we can set something going. Meantime we will continue to monitor the performance of our keywords, and will try to link out to them from wherever it is possible.

Using KeyWord Tools to target Your SEO

March 21st, 2007 · 3 Comments

When you are optimizing your site for keywords, how do you know which keywords to use? Well this is where the overture keyword tool comes into play.

For this example we are going to use our Australian Jobhunters site as a Guinea Pig, it is starting to show up reasonably well on Google, however there are no real “Killer” key word sites that are bring punters in.

The overture keyword tool shows you a list of phrases related to a word that you have typed in and how popular each keyword was over the last month. In this case we have typed in Jobs and we can see that in February this is the count.

129998 Â job search

If our site can become high up in the list for these key words we are going to be doing pretty well, however we are competing against some big punters which you can see when this Google search is done!

The keywords in our Job Hunters website are not really optimized for Job Search so with a bit of luck we will be able to improve our current ranking. We can track our ranking by using the fantastic tool provided by DigitalPoint, that tracks your rankings of keywords over time. You will see we are not even ranked for the words Job Search!

aussie Job Hunters

Now that we know what we are trying to target and we can track our results we need to set up incorporating these key words in our site, also if we can get any links to this site we want to make the anchor text “Job Search” as this will help. By adding these links via our other sites we can achieve this on a small scale.

The alterations have been made to our static pages, and the content uploaded, now we await a visit from Google’s Spiders, and over the weeks to come we will be checking the results on a regular basis.
