Home Camera asked me to take a look at their website and give an honest appraisal of what I think of the product they are offering. From the first glimpse of the site it looks like for free you can use their software along with a webcam to provide in house surveillance and to me that sounded like a pretty good deal that I should investigate further.

What exactly is HomeCamera?
HomeCamera lets you turn your webcam into a surveillance camera, and you can do this by using HomeCamera’s security software. This means that you can monitor whatever is going on in your home from either your PC, or even a mobile device like a mobile phone or PDA.

How does HomeCamera Work?
On their site they have a 3 minute overview that really gives you a great insight into how the product works, I will attempt to summarize however you should check out the home camera for a complete overview..

• You install the software on your PC, and register with the company.
• You set up webcams around your house connected to your PC. (Maximum of 4)
• You can share your video/pictures with other homecamera users if you wish.
• By logging into the HomeCamera website at anytime from anywhere you can see whats going on. Also a month of video and camera footage is saved on the HomeCamera site, so you don’t need to worry about keeping the footage.
• Motion detection capable - from what I understand you can also set up motion detection alerts that will fire off an alert (and a picture ) to your mobile phone or portable device.

Summary - What do I think
Well I have to be honest, I think it is a brilliant idea and I will definitely be looking at perhaps doing this over the Christmas period when I may head away for a few days on vacation. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to login any time and see whats happening around the house!

At the moment they are offering the service for free, if you would like to participate in the beta programme. Also if you do participate you will be offered the option to upgrade in the future at a special price.
